The Ouachita Parish School Board will spend more than $400,000 this school year to pay national board certified teachers and personnel an annual stipend.

The school board approved the expenditure during its regular meeting Tuesday.

While the Legislature approved spending $16.3 million in stipends for nationally certified teachers this past legislative session, Gov. Bobby Jindal used his line-item veto power to cut the funding from the state budget for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. That means school systems throughout the state must pay annual stipends. School systems are legally required to pay stipends for National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certified teachers.
