As Americans prepare to fire up their grills and pop fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July, several local officials hope people will pause and reflect on why the United States enjoys its independence.

America has enjoyed its independence and freedom over the past 234 years thanks to the men and women who serve in uniform, said U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-Quitman.

Alexander will be in Monroe this weekend to honor several local veterans during the Monroe Jaycees' annual Fourth of July celebration at Forsythe Park. This year's event will be held Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
