OPPJ opposes moratorium on deepwater drilling

Though a New Orleans federal judge on Tuesday lifted the six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling ordered by President Obama in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon incident in the Gulf of Mexico, the Ouachita Parish Police Jury agreed to send a letter to the president opposing the ban.

The police jury passed a resolution during its regular meeting Monday that called on Obama to reduce the six-month moratorium to no more than 30 days.

Parish attorney Jay Mitchell said the police jury will send its letter opposing the lengthy ban since it is expected that the Obama administration will appeal the decision by U.S. District Court Judge Martin Feldman.
