Ouachita Parish officials may seek roughly $2 million in a sustainable communities grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Congress recently approved $150 million for HUD for a sustainable communities initiative "to improve regional planning efforts that integrate housing and transportation decisions and increase the capacity to improve land use and zoning," according to HUD's website.

The purpose for the grant program is to develop a regional plan for sustainable development in areas. A plan approved for HUD funding would need to address future housing concerns as well as economic development opportunities and transportation issues.
