The Anteaters are making their fifth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance and their sixth in school history after completing 2010 with a 37-19 record to finish second in the Big West Conference behind Cal State Fullerton. UC Irvine is coming off a three-game sweep of conference rival Long Beach State.

In their only ever series meeting, UC-Irvine lost twice to LSU in the NCAA Super Regional in Baton Rouge in 2008. The Tigers fell in game 1 of the Super Regional, 11-5, and were one out away from elimination in game 2 before a ninth-inning rally propelled LSU to 9-7 win. The Tigers exploded for a 21-7 victory in game 3 of the series to earn a College World Series berth in the last game in the old Alex Box Stadium.

In 2009, Virginia defeated the Anteaters in the final of the NCAA Irvine Regional en route to the Cavalier's College World Series appearance. UC Irvine went 2-2 in the regional, with victories over Fresno State and San Diego State.

The only common 2010 opponent LSU has with UC-Irvine is Pepperdine. The Anteaters fell to Pepperdine in their only meeting of the season, 6-0. LSU defeated the Waves in Baton Rouge, 8-1 and 3-2. UC-Irvine is 1-2 against top-25 teams this season, including a split with regional host UCLA.
