Expanding our boundaries

Many times we do not know our own potential. Sometimes it usually takes someone else to see our potential and they begin to stir the gift within us. They free us from limitations that we have placed upon ourselves, or that our environment has placed upon us.

My chemistry teacher in high school saw something in me that very few teachers saw in me, or I saw in myself. I had never been the scholarly type. I loved sports above my academics. I will never forget the day Mr. Allen who was my chemistry teacher asked me to step out into the hall with him.

He was a big man who had played some professional baseball, but this day was not a conversation about athletics. He asked me if I had thought about what I wanted for my major when I went to college. I told him that I had not. Most of my thoughts had been about playing football on the collegiate level. Football was my first love. Academics were important, but they were not rated above football. What he said to me next was a question that I was totally unprepared to receive. His question was outside the boundaries of who I thought I was.
