English-Speaking Union hears about King Arthur "King Arthur: Legend and History" was the chosen topic presented by Dr. Jeffrey Anderson, Professor of History at ULM, to the English-Speaking Union on Sunday, April 25.
Minette Saber, program chairman, introduced the speaker. For centuries scholars and historians have debated the details of the life of the legendary 5th Century King Arthur. Dr Anderson discussed the many printed references including Morte d'Arthur by Sir Thomas Mallory, the Chronicles, Welsh poetry. Public attention became focused on so-called Camelot when President Jack and Jackie Kennedy were in office and in the 1960's when the wildly popular stage musical "Camelot" was produced. Many now view Arthur as a composite King.
Presiding at the meeting was Joan Chardkoff, branch president, who welcomed the members and guests. She announced a few of the outstanding speakers scheduled for 2010-2011, including Dr Elliot Engel, Dr. Trey Berry, Leo Honeycutt, and an Evelyn Wrench speaker sent from New York.
