'Guarded' mood among legislators

With the 2010 regular legislative session now under way, area legislators say the mood among state lawmakers could best be described as apprehensive.

The Legislature convened the Regular Session Monday, staring at a projected $1.7 billion revenue shortfall heading into the 2010-2011 fiscal year, which begins July 1.

Pending a review of state finances by the Revenue Estimating Conference, Gov. Bobby Jindal could be forced to order some $250 million-$400 million in mid-year budget cuts before the 2009-2010 fiscal year concludes June 30. Earlier this year, lackluster sales and income tax collections prompted Jindal to order some $248 million in mid-year cuts for the current fiscal year.
