Board renames library after fallen deputy The Southwestern Ouachita Regional Library will be renamed to honor a Ouachita Parish sheriff's deputy who died earlier this month from injuries suffered in the line of duty. The Ouachita Parish Library Board of Control voted Monday to rename the library the Cpl. J.R. Searcy Memorial Library.
The library currently is under construction in western Ouachita Parish. It is being built at the corner of Mount Vernon Church Road and La. 34. It is expected to be open sometime next year. The library is located within two blocks of Woodlawn Elementary School, where Searcy spent seven years flagging traffic to make sure students arrived at school safely. Ouachita Parish Sheriff Royce Toney thanked the library board of control for its decision to honor the fallen deputy.
"That was absolutely tremendous that they did that because they didn't have to do it," Toney said. "This was J.R's patrol zone, and he took it very seriously. He was there days and nights to make sure those kids were safe."
