Jesus wants me for a sunbeam
I learned at a very early age that Jesus wanted me for a "Sun-bean." I didn't know what a sun-bean was, but if that's what Jesus wanted me to be, then I would do my best to be one. I assumed it had to do with growing in the love of Christ and in the knowledge of His Word. I also assumed it had to do with planting the good seeds of truth. I assumed I was to be a "Johnny Appleseed" for Jesus – scattering seeds of His goodness wherever I went. I can only assume the prophet Hosea called us to be "Sun-beans for Jesus." After all, he tells us to sow for ourselves righteousness and reap the fruit of unfailing love.
Even as a preschooler, the theology of the little song, "Jesus Wants Me For a Sun-bean" made perfect sense. One can only imagine my confusion when I realized that Jesus did not want me for a sun-bean. As it turns out, He wanted me for a "sunbeam." A sunbeam? Whoever heard of such a thing? I knew nothing about sunbeams, except that my mom had a Sunbeam mixer she used to make cakes. What was Nellie Talbot from Missouri thinking when she penned such a thought? My preschool theology was deeply shaken. I left the preschool assembly feeling confused and lost. My little soul sunk deep into despair. It was all I could do to choke down the three Ritz crackers and orange Kool-Aid. For the full column, see Page 5A of this week's Citizen.
