911 launches awareness campaign Ouachita Parish 911 officials will begin an awareness campaign to inform citizens about misusing the emergency call service.
Ouachita Parish 911 director Craig Lott said roughly 70 percent of the calls to 911 are now made by wireless telephones.
One problem associated with wireless calls is the amount of accidental 911 calls, he said. "It's somewhere around 30 percent of our calls that are unintended calls," Lott said. "They take a long time to deal with because we have to call people back. Many times they don't even know they've called 911. So, we're sending letters to the people we can identify and we'll try other ways to get the word out to be careful when they're making phone calls." For the full report, see Page 7A of this week's Citizen.
