Bass wins ESU competition William Shakespeare was in flower again last Sunday. Local high school students from public, private, parochial and independent high schools in the northeast Louisiana region competed for a trip to New York City's Lincoln Center, $1,000, and a trophy offered by the Monroe Branch of The English-Speaking Union of the United States' annual Shakespeare Competition.
Houston Bass, the winner of the 2010 Competition, a student from Ouachita Christian School, is currently preparing for the ESU National Competition in New York City's Lincoln Center. His electric delivery of a speech by the character Aaron from "Titus Andronicus" impressed the judges by its precision and skill. Houston's sponsoring teacher is Annice Ernst.
Kaitlyn McKinley from Neville High School was judged runner-up for her role as Ophelia from "Hamlet." The runner-up in the competition receives a $500 prize, a trophy and a chance to participate in the National Competition should the winner be unable to attend. Kaitlyn's teacher is Patricia Turner of Neville High School. For the full report, see Page 11A of this week's Citizen.
