The Ouachita Parish Police Jury voted 4-2 Monday to waive property taxes owed on 12 adjudicated properties that Rays of Sonshine wants to use for a neighborhood stabilization project in south Monroe.

Police jury president Shane Smiley and police juror Charles Jackson voted no on the matter.

A non-profit established by Lynn Daniel to assist people in need, Rays of Sonshine recently received a $1.5 million federal grant for the adjudicated properties project. The project would bring new housing to neighborhoods near Mt. Nebo Baptist Church on Jackson Street, according to Daniel, who founded Rays of Sonshine in 1998.
