Honey Babe's story comes to stage

The annual Black Heritage Drama is returning to the Monroe Civic Center this month with the story of Monroe's first bag woman, the legendary "Honey Babe."

The drama will be presented Thursday and Friday Feb. 11-12 at the Civic Center theater.
"Honey Babe's Treasure" focuses on the life of Betty Langhorn, a local teacher who became a bag woman and roamed the streets of Monroe for over 30 years. Langhorn, known as "Honey Babe" became distraught after a 1925 fire killed her six children and she began to roam the street begging for nickels. She amassed a small fortune over the course of three decades and buried it underneath houses and in empty lots in South Monroe.

Langhorn was feared by children in the community because she lived in the cemetery. Despite their fear she often left jars of money on the steps of families whose children were in need of help.
