Glenwood, outreach center team up for free AAA screenings

Dr. Edmund Nagem and Glenwood Regional Medical Center will team up with Aneurysm Outreach to offer a free abdominal aortic aneurysm screening Feb. 13.
AAA screenings will take place from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Glenwood Medical Mall on Thomas Road in West Monroe.

AAA screening is recommended for people age 60 or older, or people 55 or older with a family history of AAA.

Every five to six years, participants must pre-qualify and schedule and appointment for a screening.

An abdominal aortic aneurysm is an abnormal ballooning of the abdominal portion of the aorta, which is the major artery extending from the heart.

Much like a weak spot in a worn tire, AAA causes an increasing bulge in the wall of the aorta which can rupture if not detected and treated, resulting in death.

The exact cause is not known, but risk factors include atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries, smoking, hypertension and family history, particularly among men age 60 or older.
About 25 percent of cases are those with a first degree relative with AAA.

AAA is up to five times more common in men than in women and is 3.5 times more common in Caucasian men than in African-American males.

Most AAAs are asymptomatic, which means they typically expand slowly over time to eventually rupture without warning. It has been estimated that half of all people with untreated abdominal aortic aneurysms die of rupture within five years.

AAAs are the 13th leading cause of death in the United States and the third leading cause of sudden death among American men.

Participants are asked not to eat or drink anything for eight to 12 hours prior to their scheduled appointments.

To register for the free screening, call Glenwood's toll-free Well Line at 1-877-726-9355.
