Carl Shurte officiating. Interment was at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Ben Sanders Katz Ben Sanders Katz, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother was born in Starkville, Miss., on March 3, 1938, the son of the late Ben Sanders and Mildred Stanley Katz. A graduate of Starkville (MS) High School and Mississippi State University, his professional career took him to many parts of North America and the Caribbean. Mr. Katz was a senior vice president of Amax Coal Company and president of Deposit Trust Bank. A member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Monroe, he was very active in the civic community, currently serving the City of Monroe in his 3rd term as Councilman of District 2. He served on numerous boards including the Council on Aging, the Food Bank of NELA, Louisiana Business Loans, Monroe Rotary, and the Council of Retired Executives (SCORE). Survivors include his wife of almost 54 years, Kay Kellogg Katz; son, Brit Katz; daughters Kelley Vance and Kris Coons (Dick); grandson, Trevor Reynolds (Jodi); great-granddaughter, Rylee Reynolds; brother, Robert O. Katz (Vicki); and uncles, aunts, and cousins. Memorial services were at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church in Monroe, with Dr. Allison Moody officiating under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. Final resting place was Friendship Cemetery, Columbus, Miss. Honorary pallbearers were John Bryant, David Ezernack, Bill Hoover, Lyle Miller, Ed Pirtle, Ron Powell, Frank Swayze, Jack Vaughan and Mike Walsworth. Because of his love for the University of Louisiana at Monroe and for his community, the family established a scholarship fund.
