Locals honor slain civil rights leader

More than 100 local residents joined Monroe city officials Friday for the 31st annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Salute at Monroe Civic Center.

Besides honoring King for his work in the civil rights movement, the annual ceremony celebrates the heritage of the African-American community.

In what has become a new tradition, the city also honors local people for their service in the fields of education, justice, community service, public service and more.

For the full report and photos from the event, see Page 8A of this week's Citizen.
