Ouachita says no to "race to the Top'

Ouachita Parish Schools elected not to participate in the U.S. Department of Education's "Race to the Top" program in light of concerns over how the program would affect the school system long-term.

Superintendent Dr. Bob Webber said a majority of school districts in northeast Louisiana chose not to participate in "Race to the Top" due to the same concerns.

"We decided not to participate and we sent our letter in Monday afternoon," Webber said. "Essentially we made our decision for several reasons, but mostly it was due to the uncertainty about the program. We had concerns about when the grant is discontinued, what would be the responsibility of local school systems as far as the financial part of it."
