WMHS football picks up award The West Monroe High School football team has finished No. 13 nationally for the 2009 season. The announcement was made by MaxPreps, a California-based company that ranks more than 16,000 high school varsity football teams.
After having its 2008 unbeaten ended by Destrehan, West Monroe reeled off 15 consecutive victories for 2009 capped by a 30-0 blitz of Archbishop Rummel to win the Louisiana Class 5A state championship. It was the Rebels' first state title since the 2005 season and is their seventh in school history. West Monroe is one of 50 schools being honored on the fifth annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the National Guard.
"The National Guard's long-term commitment to high school sports has enabled the MaxPreps Tour of Champions to create and sustain the most prestigious national honor given to high school teams in America." said MaxPreps President Andy Beal. "Any time your school can be recognized as one of the top teams in America, it's an honor. We're excited about this award and winning the state championship," said West Monroe head football coach Don Shows, who completed his 20th season.
