Monroe plans MLK event Ceremony includes prayer, music, speakers, awards and a red beans & rice dinner
The City of Monroe will host the 31st annual Birthday Salute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 15, in the W.L. "Jack" Howard Theater.
The Rev. Oliver Billups from Mount Olivet Baptist Church will be the keynote speaker. The 2009 theme is: "Exploration through Education!"
The public is invited to attend. The ceremony celebrates the heritage of the African-American community and the vision and leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In what has become a new tradition, will honor individuals for their service in the fields of education, justice, community service, public service and more. Events include singing, prayer, inspirational speaking and a traditional red beans & rice fellowship meal.
In observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King holiday, all Monroe City offices, Monroe Transit, Parks & Recreation Community Centers, Masur Museum of Art will be closed on Monday, Jan. 18.
All garbage normally collected on Mondays will instead be collected on Wednesday, Jan. 20. |
