Economy tops 2009 news
by Scott Rogers - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
V-Vehicle Co.'s decision to locate in Ouachita Parish, the merger of Monroe's CenturyTel and Embarq, construction of a new Monroe Regional Airport terminal, a study to shape western Ouachita's future and ongoing financial woes at Ouachita Correctional Center were some of the top local news stories here in 2009.

V-Vehicle announced over the summer it would take over the former Guide plant and eventually employ 1,400 people who will build fuel efficient automobiles at the eastern Ouachita Parish facility. Economic development officials estimate V-Vehicle will create an additional 1,800 indirect jobs throughout the area.

In October, 53 percent of voters in Ouachita Parish supported a 1.8-mill property tax to aid V-Vehicle. Proceeds generated by the property tax will be used to pay bond indebtedness, which will be incurred to help finance a local incentives package that was offered to V-Vehicle to help lure the company to the region.
