Madeline Kate Haughton Teer
Mrs. Madeline H. Teer of West Monroe, formerly of Delhi, was born on Sept. 24, 1912 in Clay, Louisiana, the oldest of the seven children of William Marshall Haughton and Sallie Hellon Beatty Haughton and passed from this life on Dec. 9, 2009, at the age of 97.
She attended school in Ansley and Haynesville and graduated from Louisiana Tech in 1934 with a degree in Home Economics. Miss Madeline, as she was affectionately known, taught Home Economics at Delhi for one year until marrying Dr. Lorenz Teer and helping him and his family build the Delhi Clinic and Sanitarium. She served as the receptionist, bookkeeper and dietician for the clinic and hospital and also sewed the sheets and pillow cases for the hospital beds. Miss Madeline later became a full-time homemaker and mother, and a pillar of the Delhi United Methodist Church. She served on the administrative board of the church, as president of the Women's Society of Christian Service, taught an Adult Sunday School Class until she was almost 90 years old and often hosted visiting preachers. Miss Madeline excelled at cooking, sewing and gardening. Her homemade rolls were the favorite of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved flowers and shared her blooms and plants with many residents of Delhi. Travel was another passion. Her family and the Lamar Bryant family enjoyed many vacations together. Miss Madeline spent many happy hours at the family camp on Lake Bruin, and always seemed to catch the most fish. She was a founding member of the Delhi PTA, serving as its first president.
Miss Madeline was proud of the fact that she continued to cook, live independently, garden and drive until her recent brief illness.
She is survived by one sister, Major Dorothy "Jack" Haughton of Denver, Colo.; children, Ellen & Garland Kyle of Bossier City, and Jane & John Ellett of West Monroe; grandchildren to whom she was known as "Granny", Al & Tammye Kyle of Dallas, Texas, Kevin & Michelle Kyle of Houston, Texas, Robert & Kim Kyle of Bossier City, David & Katrina Ellett of Houston, Diana & Tom Butler of Nashville, Tenn. and Darin & Stephanie Ellett of Natchitoches; 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
A celebration of her life was at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009 at the Delhi United Methodist Church with Rev. Chris Thomas officiating. Burial was in the Delhi Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home-Delhi.
Visitation was Saturday evening at Cox Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were her grandsons and Joe Bob Wilson.
Any planned memorials may be made to the Delhi United Methodist Church or the charity of one's choice.
