Memories made in Bienville
by Robert Charles Payne - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Some of the most memorable times that I have stored in the confines of my mental theater are movies of camping and hunting in the big woods of Bienville Parish near the little town of Saline. The grocery store in Saline was Enloe's. This grocery store was owned by the parents of Tommy Enloe, one of ULM's greatest basketball stars. Tommy and I were the same age. He played on the hardwood floors and I played on a little softer turf called the football field.

My three brothers and I would camp during the Christmas holidays in our little shed that had been towed from my Granddaddy Beck's farm south of Alexandria. Granddaddy's property bordered the property that was owned by LSU-Alexandria. My brothers Devone Jr., the oldest; Joe Beck, next to the youngest; Andy, the youngest; and I would meet with our families at Mother's during the Christmas holidays. After sharing a Christmas dinner, we four brothers would head out to the deer camp. During this time, Robert Jr, my oldest son and Dylan, Joe Beck's oldest son were the only boys old enough to go hunting. If you were to ask Robert Charles, Jr. about some of the best times in his life, he would always list camping in Bienville Parish at the top.
