Flames engulf a home as a family stands outside and watches helplessly. Firefighters arrive on scene and begin battling the blaze.

West Monroe assistant fire chief Todd Smith has seen this time and time again.

When he talks with a family who's watched their home go up in flames, he usually gets the same response — they heard the smoke detector, found their house was on fire and immediately got outdoors to safety.
