Officials brace for residents' reactions

Some Ouachita Parish residents may soon learn their property is now located in a flood zone and they'll need to buy flood insurance.

Ouachita Parish Floodplain manager Lisa Richardson said the parish's new flood zone maps have resulted in many residents being removed from a flood zone while some residents now live in one. Richardson spoke about the new flood zone maps at Monday's Ouachita Parish Police Jury meeting.

"Some will be put into a flood zone when they've never been in one before," she said.
Richardson encouraged parish officials to begin a public awareness campaign to inform citizens of the revised flood maps.
