Story Archives: Ouachita declared agricultural disaster area

Ouachita declared agricultural disaster area
by Scott Rogers - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Ouachita Parish was one of dozens of parishes designated as natural disaster areas by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in light of farming losses from this summer's drought and recent excessive rains.

Gov. Bobby Jindal's office announced the USDA disaster declaration earlier this week.
Farmers in 53 parishes will be eligible to receive assistance for production losses to corn, cotton, rice, sorghum, soybeans, forage crops and sweet potatoes.

The 53 parishes in Louisiana were designated natural disaster areas on Nov. 24, which now makes all qualified farmers in the designated areas eligible for low interest emergency (EM) loans from USDA's Farm Service Agency (FSA), provided eligibility requirements are met.

For the full report, see Page 2A of this week's Citizen.
