Public works finances dire

The financial situation at the Ouachita Parish Police Jury Public Works Department is deteriorating, and the police jury may need to revisit how the department is funded.
The Public Works Department presented its 2010 proposed budget during a police jury finance committee meeting Monday.

Public Works is funded by a one-cent sales tax, which is dedicated to road construction and maintenance. Sales tax revenue for 2009 was $5.9 million. The projected sales tax revenue for the 2010 fiscal year is $5.4 million.

Public Works is expected to end the 2009 fiscal year with a $3 million fund balance. The proposed 2010 fiscal year budget calls for a $1 million fund balance at the end of the year.
"We're running out of cash," said police juror Charles Jackson, chairman of the police jury's finance committee.
