"Considerable weakness" in employment numbers in northeast Louisiana should result in a weak selling season for area retailers during the 2009 Christmas holidays, according to the University of Louisiana-Monroe's Center for Business and Economic Research.

Dr. Bob Eisenstadt, director of the Center for Business and Economic Research, said the center is forecasting holiday sales in Ouachita Parish to decline by as much as 5 percent compared to the 2008 holiday shopping season.

In comparison, holiday sales in 2008 increased roughly 2 percent over sales in 2007, Eisenstadt said.
