Burkett enters district court race

Laurie Burkett has operated a private law practice focused on family law since she graduated from Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1995.

Now, the mother of one and wife of Ouachita Parish Police Jury President Shane Smiley has her sights set on a new goal. She's one of the candidates running to fill the remainder of Judge Marcus Clark's term on the 4th Judicial District Court bench. Clark recently was elected to the state Supreme Court. He took the oath of office to assume his Supreme Court duties today (Thursday).

"The District Court is where the majority of citizens in our community and others will appear with respect to their rights and obligations under the law," said Burkett. "Our district court judges, more so than our appellate judges or our state Supreme Court justices, touch more individual lives on a daily basis than on any other level of the courts."
