Battle of the 'cats: Wossman readies for Ruston

The Wossman Wildcats (2-5,1-2 district 3-4A) head to Ruston Friday to battle the Ruston Bearcats in a key district 3-4A contest.

Wossman is coming off the biggest win of the season last week when they upended the Bastrop Rams, 38-25.

Wossman went back and forth in the first half with Bastrop as Anthony Phillips scored the first touchdown of the game for Bastrop and Devin Richards added the PAT kick.

Wossman quickly answered back with a 15-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Kimarcus Jones to Dominique Jones, yet the extra point kick was no good and Bastrop led 7-6.

Wossman scored later on a Lewis Clayton five-yard run and then Herdurius Scott found the end zone on a two-point conversion run to tie the game.

The Wossman defense was the biggest story coming out of the game as the Wildcats returned three Bastrop fumbles for touchdowns.

The first was recovered by Shadarian Blunt in the end zone for a score.

Marcus Moore rumbled 48 yards to pay dirt with another fumble on the next Bastrop possession.
A 12-yard fumble return for a score in the fourth quarter by Darius Robinson secured the victory for Wossman.

Scott led the way for the Wildcats on offense with 129 yards and a 22-yard third quarter touchdown on 16 carries.

While the Wildcats were whipping Bastrop, Ruston was struggling to a 19-14 win over district rival West Ouachita.

A controversial fumble return for a touchdown by West Ouachita that would have given a late lead to the Chiefs was ruled down by contact by the officiating crew after a lengthy discussion.

Running back JaRen Johnson leads the Ruston offense with 217 yards on 20 carries.

Last year's leading rusher Carlos Wilson has been held relatively quiet this season and was held to just 19 yards and one touchdown last week.

Wossman is working this week on more offensive consistency and keeping the great defensive momentum going for the second consecutive week in district play.

Now another interesting side story will take shape this week for Wossman. The momentum is clearly in their favor with a win over Bastorp that few football fans in Ouachita Parish expected to see.

The Wildcats have an opportunity to string a couple of wins together and be in serious playoff contention with a new sense of optimism and urgency in the program.

One of the best running backs in the state, Scott, will get a large test this week against a defense that was shutting down 5A rushers last season. Ruston is battle tested. To large extent, so is Wossman.
Kickoff at Ruston's James Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
