Ouachita looks for win against Byrd
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Ouachita Lions (3-3, 2-1 district 1-5A) will attempt to bounce back from a disappointing loss to rival West Monroe, 43-12, as they host the Byrd Yellow Jackets this week.

"We did not execute very well," Ouachita head coach John Carr said. "We have to keep working hard and get some urgency about us out there. We have to get better against a real good Byrd team. We must play better assignment football against a wing-t offense like Byrd has.

Ouachita running back Ricky McCarthy scored on a one-yard touchdown run to end a long drive in which Ouachita converted on a pair of third down plays that kept the drive alive.

"We could not get them off the field," Carr said. "They converted every third down and you cannot do that against a good football team."

Paul Turner scored on a 12-yard run to begin the fourth quarter before another long Ouachita drive added points for The Lions when quarterback Quinten Wheeler connected with wide receiver Justin Ginyard on a 80-yard strike to pull the Lions to within the final margin of 43-12.

Ginyard caught three passes for 93 yards to lead the OPHS offense in all-purpose yards.

Ouachita is still searching for consistency in their passing game. Although Wheeler connected on several long pass plays, the Lions saw several receivers drop what would have amounted to first down receptions on many different occasions last week.

"We could not get them off the field," Carr said. "They converted every third down and you cannot do that against a good football team."

This week, a young Byrd team comes to Monroe for a very important district match.
Byrd features 47 sophomore players and had a rough start to the season.

A loss to Southwood and Captain Shreve put the Yellow Jackets back on their heels.

Byrd responded with a near perfect dismantling of the Airline Vikings last week by a score of 23-6.
Byrd held Airline to just 47 yards rushing and has improved from week to week.

Byrd has transformed their offense a bit from past years of predominant rushing. Javelin specialist Alex Walton is now the starting quarterback and the Yellow Jackets are passing more than usual to take advantage of his arm.

106.1 FM will broadcast the game live on the radio beginning with a 6:30 p.m. pre-game show with Mike Downhour and Lou St. Amant.
