Swanson has new director

The Office of Juvenile Justice announced that Swanson Center for Youth in Monroe has a new permanent director.  Carolyn A. Atkins assumed the post this week, replacing an interim director who served for several months.  

Atkins, a veteran corrections official from Maryland, brings 21 years of experience to the position.  In her most recent position, Atkins served as warden for the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women, which houses up to 900 women.  She has also been warden of a medium security facility for up to 1,200 males.

Atkins holds a bachelor's degree in management and leadership and a master's degree in management, both from Johns Hopkins University, Police Executive Leadership Program, one of the nation's premier public safety executive education programs. She also has an associate degree in criminal justice from Essex Community College in Maryland. She is an American Correctional Association Certified Correctional Executive.

"I found Louisiana to be an attractive opportunity, because Louisiana is becoming a national leader in juvenile justice reform, and is taking the lead in putting resources into programs for at-risk youth," Atkins said. "Louisiana is one of only five states chosen to participate in the MacArthur Foundation's Models for Change program, and I was impressed with the therapeutic Louisiana Model for secure care. I look forward to the opportunity to work with youth, and I want to be part of the change."

Livers. "Ms. Atkins is a dedicated and capable administrator with a big heart and a strong desire to help youth. I am confident that she will bring to Swanson a professional management style and caring attitude."
