Collaborative effort lauded The West Monroe-West Ouachita Chamber of Commerce, the City of West Monroe and the Ouachita Parish School System were awarded the 2009 Education Award at the recent Coordinating and Development Corporation Annual Awards Ceremony in Natchitoches.
The CDC, a tri-state organization serving East Texas, Southern Arkansas and West Louisiana sent nearly 700 requests for nominations.
The three entities authored, organized and facilitated the "Framework for Addressing Poverty" workshop attended by 200 educators, community leaders and agency representatives.
Facilitated by Dr. Sue Nell DeHart of aha, inc., the session addressed education challenges facing children living in poverty. The session led to a course of instruction created and implemented by University of Louisiana- Monroe Continuing Education specialists Marilyn McIntosh and Rhonda Jones.
WMWO Chamber President and Next Horizon Board member, Mary Ann Newton was recognized for her work in structuring, promoting and supporting educational initiatives on a regional scale throughout Louisiana. The award was the only one submitted as a collaborative effort among educational institutions, municipalities and chambers. |
