President's speech creates little fuss at parish schools

Despite some hoopla in other areas of the state and country regarding President Barack Obama's speech to school students Tuesday, Ouachita Parish Schools experienced little controversy because of it.

Superintendent Dr. Bob Webber said Ouachita Parish Schools allowed each school administrator to determine if Obama's speech would be shown to their students. If parents didn't want their children to see it, school officials honored that decision.

"We did leave it up to individual schools if they could work it into their schedule," Webber said. "In a lot of situations, some of our classrooms don't have cable television in them, so they couldn't watch it on CNN."

"Even the computer access was limited," Webber added.

"I read the (president's) remarks yesterday, and it looked like he was going to stay on track of just talking about children staying in school and the importance of their education," Webber continued. "Certainly we didn't want to see anything turn political, and folks were told up front that no one had to show it. I think it probably wasn't a big concern for us. Maybe some of the parents were concerned, and if they felt that way, certainly we honored their wishes."

Webber said he received some phone calls concerning the president's address to students. Some school administrators also received phone calls from parents, he said.

"But, for the most part, I think people realized it wasn't going to be anything controversial, which some thought up front," Webber said. "For the most part, it went pretty well. We just had a few calls, but there was no big uproar about it."
