Story Archives: Sterlington hosts Benton after loss to Richwood

Sterlington hosts Benton after loss to Richwood

The Sterlington Panthers hope to bounce back and improve in several areas on the football field this week as they begin the regular season at home against the Benton Tigers at 7 p.m. Friday.

Sterlington scored early in their jamboree contest last Friday at Richwood with a long touchdown pass by quarterback Logan Dobson but could not capitalize on the score. Richwood roared back to win the contest 26-7.

"We were not able to establish the running game too well," Sterlington head coach Mike Collins said. "Our offense was real inconsistent. We were inconsistent on both sides of the ball, really."

The Sterlington defense had their depth issues exposed in the second half as the offense could not sustain a drive — which kept the defense facing a strong Richwood rushing attack for much of the second half.

"We stayed on the field too long defensively," Collins said. "Hats off to Richwood, they are a real fine football team."

Sterlington will be working hard to correct mistakes this week as they host Benton High School to begin the regular season.

"We must execute our assignments better all across the page," Collins said. "We have to keep improving in every aspect of the game."

Benton shut out district rival Haughton in their jamboree game. The stout Benton defense forced four Haughton turnovers and kept setting up the Tigers offense in great field position.

An interception by T.K. Fleming keyed the defensive effort. The pick led to the first score of the game, a touchdown run by Warren McShan. McShan could be the top rushing threat that the Sterlington defense must shut down on Friday night.

Benton has gone 19-1 the past two seasons but is now under first-year head coach Caleb Guidry.

The wing-T offense of Benton has rushed them to victory time and time again and will be a another big challenge for Sterlington this week.
