Drawdown starts Sept. 1 for local bayous
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
In a cooperative effort to improve Bayou DeSiard and Black Bayou Lake, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries have developed recommendations for a drawdown of the two water bodies. The effort is primarily designed to reduce excessive aquatic vegetation.

Through the period of Sept. 1-Dec. 31, the goal is to have the water level of both water bodies at a level lower than normal (pool) stage. Bayou DeSiard will be maintained one foot below pool stage. Black Bayou Lake will be maintained three feet lower than pool stage.

In addition to aquatic vegetation control, the benefits of this drawdown will include:

• Improvement of fish spawning habitat through the reduction of organic detritus

• A decrease in accretion (filling in) of Black Bayou Lake and Bayou DeSiard from the excessive aquatic vegetation

• Improved water quality

• An opportunity for shoreline repairs and maintenance
