Alexander introduces legislation regarding abortions U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-Quitman, today introduced a resolution that urges members of Congress to eliminate taxpayer-funded abortions from any proposed health-care reform package.
"In recent weeks, members of Congress and the American people have come to know the real facts about the administration's health care reform proposal," said Alexander, a member of the Congressional Pro-life Caucus. "H.R. 3200 will result in mandated abortion coverage for nearly every insurance plan in our nation. This means that every premium holder and taxpayer would be required to pay for abortion."
Alexander said, "Under the new health care system proposed as part of H.R. 3200, every individual will be required to have health care coverage that meets 'minimum benefit standards' established by the administration. Unless Congress explicitly excludes abortion from mandated coverage and funding, those minimum benefits will include abortion.
"I am truly disturbed that the congressional leadership would include such authorization in a publicly-funded health plan, when a strong majority of the American people opposes using federal dollars to support abortion. Even more so, I am deeply saddened by the number of innocent lives that would be lost as a result.
"Our hard-working citizens should not be forced to financially back initiatives that go against their moral fiber. Congress must act now to fight for the right to life and to support needed protections for the unborn." |
