Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo was awarded the Distinguished Service Award at the 2009 Grambling Legends Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, on Saturday, July 18, at the Monroe Civic Center.

Mayo was honored for his public service as a former city councilman, and as the current mayor of the city of Monroe. During the Mayo administration, the city has achieved its best fiscal position in history, built a new Public Safety Center, started construction on a new airport terminal, created multiple innovative projects and initiatives, and is at the genesis of a transformational period for economic development, despite the national recession.

Mayo said, "I am extremely honored and grateful to receive this award from outstanding legends of Grambling State University. I share this award with our city council, department heads and all city employees. I am also particularly grateful that the Legends came to Monroe for their inaugural induction ceremony."

The Grambling Legends Sports Hall of Fame honored 25 former Gramblingnites for their accomplishments during the ceremony.
