Owens named volunteer of year

Dr. Tessa Madere Owens has been named a 2009 School Volunteer of the Year by Associated Professional Educators of Louisiana.

Owens currently practices dentistry in West Monroe with her husband, Dr. Chris Owens.

She has been named one of 10 state

Volunteers of the Year by A+PEL. She was honored last month at a reception at the Governor's Mansion in Baton Rouge.

Owens has many volunteer duties at Woodlawn Elementary School, include PTO member, spelling bee judge, classroom volunteer and room mother.

She organized and worked the Teacher Appreciation luncheon, obtained yearbook ads and pictures, worked at the spring carnival and book fair, and was box tops coordinator.

Owens also donates dental hygiene services through her dental practice and donates funds for students who cannot afford school fees and supplies.

Terri Hollingsworth, principal of Woodlawn Elementary School, said, "Tessa knew she would be actively involved with the school activities and goals from the start. What she didn't know, however, was how valuable and appreciated she would become to our school and our community."

Owens is happy to volunteer and describes the work as very rewarding.

"Volunteering at the school makes me feel complete. I really enjoy doing for others. I just want children to love learning as much as I did as a child and as I still do now. The smiles, the thank yous, make all the hard work worthwhile. That in itself is the best reward," Owens said.

Owens moved to West Monroe in 1994 after graduating from LSU School of Dentistry.

The 10 volunteers were selected by teachers throughout the state. They were nominated by members of A+PEL, a statewide teacher organization advancing teachers as career professionals.
