Monroe packs MMA house

Jaymie McKinney of West Monroe was excited about getting to fight former LSU fullback Shawn Jordan in front of his hometown crowd at the Monroe Civic Center as part of the Bellator Fighting Championships IX event on Friday night.

The estimated crowd of 3,000 fans did not return the love for their local combatant as chants of "L-S-U" rang throughout the arena by the second round of the fight.

The intensity of the crowd carried over to Jordan as he scored a win over McKinney in his first professional fight. The fight ended when Jordan caught McKinney in a rear naked choke submission hold and forced McKinney to give in during the second round.

"It was an exciting debut," Jordan said after the fight. "I know one thing, I am going to have to get stronger for these next fights. He was so strong, it was hard to keep him down on the mat."

Mike Braswell, the head trainer of the local gym, Elite Fighting, lost a split decision after three action-packed rounds against Chas Skelley in the night's first bout.

The next match of the night saw Shreveport native Chad Leondhardt win via knockout just 3:03 into round one.

Leondhardt caught his opponent, Dan Kennan, with a jaw-dropping knee strike that left Kennan prone on the canvas for several minutes.

The following bout was even quicker as middleweight contender Alex Andrade got a TKO win over Christian Fulgram just 2:01 into their contest inside the caged octogon.

Andrade used the MMA patented "ground-and-pound" technique after jumping on him and brutally punching away at his head until the ref stepped in to stop the carnage.

A classic featherweight bout was the next up on the show as Shad Lierley and Nathan Murdoch went all three rounds of the scheduled bout after neither man could gain a critical advantage and win with a submission or knockout.

It was clear throughout the fight that Lierley was better prepared and he came close at the end of the third round to scoring a TKO on Murdoch, but the Texas native would not give up or give in.

The unanimous decision from the three ringside judges gave the fight to Lierley which could set him up for a title shot in the featherweight division in the near future.

The showcase bouts of the night were the semi-final matches in the BFC Middleweight championship tournament.

Hector Lombard, who many consider a future international superstar in the top ranks of MMA, scored a first round TKO victory just 2:56 into his match with Lafayette native Damien Stelley.  Lombard was relentless in his striking attacks that forced the referee to save a defenseless Stelley near the end of the first round.

Lombard advances to a June 19 championship fight against Jared Hess of Oklahoma, who scored a TKO win with vicious punches to the head of Yosmany Cabezas in the third round.
