Dozens of contestants from the 46th annual Miss Louisiana Pageant joined local officials late last week to kick off the upcoming competition.

The pageant will be held at the Monroe Civic Center June 18-20.

Preliminary nights of competition will be held 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 18, and Friday, June 19.

The Miss Louisiana Pageant will broadcast the finals at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 20, on KNOE-TV8.

Ed Walsh returns for his ninth year as master of ceremonies.

"I am very excited because you never know what will happen over the course of this week," Walsh said. "I can tell you one thing, it will be a tough competition this year."

He said the competition will be watched in Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi as well as Louisiana.

"It truly is a Gulf Coast event," he said.

Miss Louisiana 2008 Blair Abene added, "I am so excited to see who the next Miss Louisiana will be, but I am also a little bit sad. It's been an incredible year and I know these contestants will have a fantastic time. These 29 young women have worked so hard and I know it's grueling work, but now it's time for Miss Louisiana."

Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo said the Miss Louisiana Organization works hard each year to make the pageant successful.

Mayo presented a $25,000 check to the Miss Louisiana Organization as part of the city of Monroe's sponsorship of the event.

The Miss Louisiana's Outstanding Teen Pageant will once again kick-off pageant week in Monroe with the preliminaries at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, June 14, and the finals at 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 15 at the Monroe Civic Center.

The 2009 Miss Louisiana's Outstanding Teen Pageant will have 25 contestants who will compete for the title. They also will perform in production numbers with their Fleur de Lis Princesses.

For tickets call the Monroe Civic Center Box Office at 329-0001 or for more information about the Miss Louisiana Organization, Miss Louisiana's Outstanding Teen Pageant or the Miss America Organization visit the web site at www.misslouisiana.com.
