The OK Program of Monroe will celebrate its third annual benefit and awards banquet 7 p.m. Saturday, May 23, at the Monroe Civic Center's Bayou Room.

A donation of $5 is requested to help assist in the operation of the OK Program.

Tickets can be purchased from Cpl. Larry Wilson at the city of Monroe Public Safety Center, located at 1810 Martin Luther King Drive; Cpl. Emmett Mapps at Martin Luther King Middle School; and at the Monroe City Hall in the mayor's office. Tickets can also be purchased at the door on the day of the event. Admission tickets will be placed into a raffle for a flat screen television and a $50 gas card.

The OK Program of Monroe is a male mentoring program designed to decrease the high incarceration and homicide rate of African-American males. The program was first started in Sacramento, Calif., and now has satellite programs in Louisiana, Indiana, and Arkansas.

The program's mission is to facilitate an effective partnership between police agencies, students, schools and community members.

The OK Program of Monroe began in 2005. It includes about 150 African-American males and is operating in Martin Luther King Middle School and Wossman High School.
