The Ouachita Lions fell to the Airline Vikings by a score of 10-5 last week to end their baseball season in the first round of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association playoffs.

Ouachita (12-18) was sunk by a four-run third inning by Airline that was started on a squeeze bunt by Hunter Giles.

The perfect bunt by Giles turned into three throwing errors by the Ouachita infield and three runs for the Vikings.

"Their pitching was the big difference," Ouachita head coach Brian Carter said. "We made way too many costly errors in the game."

By the end of the inning, the Vikings had seized a 6-1 lead and went into full control of the contest.

Ouachita scored three runs in the sixth inning to keep things interesting. Ouachita again scored in the fifth but had no more answers against the incredible pitching depth of the fifth-seeded Airline squad.

Ouachita ended the season after a third-place finish in district 2-5A and another playoff berth for the program.

"This was one of the most talented teams I have coached," Carter said. "We have several freshman arms that will be working hard to pitch well for us next year."

Ouachita beat West Monroe 13-3 on April 23 for their biggest win of the season. Ouachita lost other games against West Monroe three times by a combined six runs.

"We lost two to Ruston in the last inning," Carter said. "We had some misfortunes but played hard the whole year."

Outfielders Blake Roark and Xavier Wallace join pitcher Kyle Morace as the lone seniors on the Ouachita squad.

"We will have an even bigger senior group next year," Carter said. "We expect bigger things out of the program and more senior leadership to help us in the future."
