Cultura closes year with installation

Bringing the 2008-2009 club year to a close, members of the Cultura Book Club met in May for a spring luncheon and officer installation in the guest house of member Linda Armstrong.

Hostesses with Armstrong were Montez Branch, Geraldine Kirby, and Pat McClendon. Guests were Bonnie Hales, who catered the delicious luncheon, and former Cultura member Peggy Beer.

After the meal, group photographs were taken by Don Halsell and Charles Welch.

Following a brief business session conducted by President Sue Drewett, Jean Halsell installed the new officers for 2009-2010: Linda Armstrong, president; Sue Greer, vice-president; Jean Halsell, secretary; Pat McClendon, treasurer; Pat Funderburk, parliamentarian and historian; and Pat Valentine, reporter.

Using the theme of "From the Sublime to the Ridiculous," Halsell recalled the emphasis on poetry during the past year, which featured the reading of a favorite poem at each meeting.

For the "sublime" Halsell used the inspirational poem "A Psalm of Life," by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; and for the "ridiculous" Halsell presented an appropriate humorous Shel Silverstein poem for each officer as she was installed.

The club presented a gift to Sue Drewett and thanked her for her excellent leadership as president during a very successful year.

Drewett presented gifts to her fellow officers, Linda Armstrong, Pat McClendon, Peggy Henderson, Edwina Welch and Jean Halsell, for their cooperation and work.

Twenty-six members were present. A summer outing of the club will occur at a time to be announced later.
