Vernon Cody Adkins
Funeral services for Mr. Vernon Cody "Buck" Adkins, 86, of Monroe, were at noon Monday, May 11, 2009, at Grace Episcopal Church in Monroe, with Rev. Gregg Riley officiating. Interment was at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
Mr. Adkins was preceded in death by his father, John Critt Adkins; mother, Inez McKenzie Adkins; sister, Modena Lowrey; and brother, James Buchanan Adkins.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Eversull Adkins; daughters, Alice Adkins Jordan and husband, John T., Elizabeth Adkins Butler and husband, Robert O. "Bob" Jr., and Margaret Adkins Hastings and husband, E. Eugene "Gene"; granddaughters, Kate Jordan, Mary Minor, Elizabeth Anne and Jeanne Cody Butler; grandsons, Cooper and McKenzie Hastings; sisters, Maxine Mayo of Shreveport, and Eloise Bennett of San Augustine, Texas; sister-in-law, Helen Adkins of Benton; brother-in-law, Leonard Eversull and wife, Pearl, of Houston, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Ronnie McDanell, Jerry Pender, Eddie Ralph Harmon, Frank Trude, R. Cody Mayo Jr. and Wayne Earpe.
Memorials may be made to Grace Episcopal Church.

Willa Beth Holloway Clark
Mrs. Willa Beth Holloway Clark, of Monroe, passed away on Friday afternoon, May 8, 2009, after 99 years of a giving, loving and creative life.
Her funeral was at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with Mr. David Burkett officiating. Interment was at Mer Rouge Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters; a brother; husband, Leslie Hugh Clark; son, Leslie Carroll Clark; and grandson, Samuel Clark Ingram.
Survivors include her son, Hugh Holloway Clark and wife Minta of Devers, Texas; daughter, Brenda Clark Ingram McDaniel and husband, Jim, of Monroe; grandsons, Leslie B. Ingram and wife, Sarah, of Methwold, England, Hugh H. Clark Jr. and wife, Mihyo, of Alaska, Christopher L. Clark of Dayton, Texas, Patrick C. Clark of Georgia, and Sean Michael Clark of Farmerville; granddaughter, Donna I. Howie and husband, Steve, of Lexington, S.C.; and many great-grandsons, great-granddaughters, nieces and nephews.

Daniel Wallace Doherty
Daniel Wallace Doherty, a lifelong resident of Jennings, joined his beloved wife Marion Guidry in Heaven on April 20, 2009 at the youthful age of 90.
Survivors include his three children, Daniel W. Doherty Jr., M.D., of Liberal, Kansas, George F. Doherty, of Lafayette, and Marion Doherty Broussard and her husband, Gerald Broussard, M.D., of Monroe; 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren He was preceded in death by his daughter, Diane Doherty Young, of Monroe. He is also survived by one brother, Dolan Doherty of Evangeline.
His funeral was at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Monroe, with burial to follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park. Arrangements were by Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Monroe.

Walter H. Gates Jr.
Mr. Walter H. Gates Jr., 77, of West Monroe, passed away on Friday, May 8, 2009, in Conroe, Texas, after a brief illness.
His funeral was at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in West Monroe, with Revs. Cecil Gregory and Rick McPherson officiating. Interment was at the church cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home of West Monroe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter H. Gates Sr. and Bertha Townsend Gates; brother, Lee Gates and his two sisters, Audie Jones and Aliece Harper.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Shirley Rolen Gates; sons, Gerald D. Gates and wife, Pam, Ronnie Gates, Steve Gates and wife, Georgia; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Gates' grandsons served as pallbearers along with his special friend, Gene Rogers.
Memorials may be made to the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.

Marguerite McHenry Godwin
Marguerite McHenry "Snooky" Godwin, died at her home in Monroe on Monday, May 4, 2009.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at Riverview Cemetery in Monroe, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Pete Godwin, and grandson, Stanley Donald Shlosman III.
Survivors include her two daughters, Leila Godwin Turpin and her husband, Jeff, of Arkadelphia, Ark., and Marjorie Wendell Godwin; four grandchildren, Peter Jefferson (PJ) Turpin and his wife, Fran, Caroline Curry and her husband, Andy, Thomas Wendell Shlosman, and Leila Ann Shlosman; and two great-grandsons, Thomas Curry and Clayton Turpin.
Serving as pallbearers were P.J. Turpin, Thomas Shlosman, William Smitha Nadler, William Smitha Nadler IV, and Lewis McHenry. Honorary pallbearers were Armand McHenry, Henry Biedenharn, Jack Mabry, John Shealy and Dr. James W. Wade. A special thanks to her friend of thirty years, Mary Bratcher.

Calvin Kent Hamel
Mr. Calvin Kent Hamel, 82, passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2009.
His funeral was at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, at Mulhearn Memorial Park Mausoleum with Linda Ann Tharpe and Craig Garrott officiating. Interment followed under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Albert and Maie Allen Hamel; brothers, James Albert and Charles Early Hamel; sister, Mildred Herring; and his wives, Eva Bailey Hamel and Marie Vincent Hamel.
Survivors include his three daughters, Phyllis Hamel of Youngsville, Patricia Garrott and husband, Craig, of McKinney, Texas, Paula Harrison and husband, David, of Monroe; his sons, Glen Hamel and wife, Debbie, of Hendersonville Tenn., and Alan Hamel of Monroe; his grandchildren, Dawn Nelson and husband, Richard, John Garrott and wife, Carrie, Brooke Golson, Joseph Hamel and wife, Jessica, Blair Ramey and husband, Clint, Chris Chunn, Heather Bryant and husband, Clay, Brittany Truett, Ashley Hamel, Vaughn Hamel; and his great-grandchildren, Andreaus Hamel, Kathryn Golson, Caleb Ramey, Noah Nelson, Colton Massey, Dillon Chunn and Andrew Nelson.
Pallbearers were John Garrott, Clint Ramey, Walter Tharpe, Craig Garrott, Glen Hamel and Randy Phillips.

Evelyn O. Haynes
Mrs. Evelyn O. Haynes, 87, of West Monroe, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2009, in West Monroe.
Her funeral was at 10 a.m. Friday, May 1, at Community Baptist Church with Rev. Danny McIlveene officiating. Interment was at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Calhoun.
She was preceded in death by an infant sister and by her son, Jerry David Haynes.
Survivors include her beloved husband of 62 years, William C. Haynes Sr.; son, Gene C. Haynes Sr. and wife, Martha; daughters, Sallie Haynes Stevenson and husband, David; and Kitty Kathleen Haynes Smith and husband, Eddie; son, William C. Haynes Jr.; a brother, Charles M. Martin Jr., and wife, Martha; 14 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Billy Ben Letson
Dr. Billy Ben Letson, 78, of Monroe, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2009.
His funeral was at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 3, at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with Rev. Warren Eckhardt officiating. Interment was at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery.
His parents, Paul and Susie Rosser Letson, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Tommie Hereford Letson; special dog, Lucy; daughter, Lori Cason and husband, Randy; son, Jeff Letson; grandchildren, Ashley Reed and husband, Rodney; Andy Bryant, Magen Letson, Bryant Letson and Alison Bryant; brother, Neil Letson and wife, Patricia, of Harrison, Tenn.; sister, Katie Gregg and husband, Carlos, of Sheffield, Ala.; sister-in-law, Carolyn Hereford Marshall and husband, Jack; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to North Monroe Baptist Church and ULM Foundation.

Billie Jean Spurlock McDuffie
Mrs. Billie Jean Spurlock McDuffie, 80, of West Monroe, passed away Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Glenwood Regional Medical Center.
Her funeral was at 1 p.m. Monday, May 4, at Mulhearn Funeral Home of West Monroe, with Rev. George Wortham officiating. Graveside services were at 4 p.m. at Lake Village Cemetery in Lake Village, Ark.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Bryan McDuffie.
Survivors include her son, J.B. McDuffie Jr. and wife, Suzanne; daughter, Jean McDuffie; grandchildren, J. Bryan McDuffie III, and Jennifer Barrett McDuffie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Blythe McDuffie, Jack Dement, Richard Poole, Trevor Melnor, Dennis Rogers and Barnett McDuffie.
Memorials may be made to the Highland Presbyterian Church in West Monroe.

Patricia Ann Stone McNeely
Mrs. Patricia Ann Stone McNeely, 67, of Monroe, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe.
Her funeral was at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with Rev. Randy Impson officiating. Interment was at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Warren McNeely; father, Floyd E. Stone; and brother, Gerald Stone.
Survivors include two daughters, Debora McNeely Colvin and husband, Todd, and their children, Eron and Clay Colvin; and Susan McNeely Love and husband, Lew, and their children, Kathleen and Thomas Love; mother, Evlon Stone; and brother, David Stone.

Doris Blythe Andrews Menefee
Private family services for Mrs. Doris Blythe Andrews Menefee, 100, of Monroe, were Friday, May 1, 2009, at Grace Episcopal Church with Rev. Gregg Riley officiating. Interment was in Mulhearn Memorial Park under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
Mrs. Menefee passed away Thursday, April 30, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.M. "Pete" Menefee; son, Jerry Leonard Menefee; and granddaughter, Kristi Ann Cook.
Survivors include her daughter, Ann Menefee Cook and husband, James; grandsons, Jamie Cook, Mike Cook and wife, Sherry; granddaughter, Jena Brubaker; and many great and great-great grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Robert Ray Oliveaux
Mr. Robert Ray "Polly" Oliveaux, 73, of Monroe, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2009.
His funeral was at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with Rev. Ted Barnes officiating. Interment was at Hall Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by one sister and five brothers.
Survivors include his son, Gary Oliveaux and wife, Tammie; daughters, Rita Lee and husband, Brian, and Cindy Hammond and husband, Harvey; sisters, Dorothy Sanders, Lillie Mae Godina and Rosie McIntosh; grandchildren, Michael Lisota, Claye Sims, Katie Oliveaux, Heath Hammond and Summer Lee; and great-grandchildren, MacKenzie Sims, MacKailyn Hensley and Claiborne Sims.
Pallbearers were Ed Moore, Nicky Godina, Bobby Godina, John Godina, Lester Olivo and Mark Doyle.

Raymond Lee Stoddard
Mr. Raymond Lee Stoddard, 52, of Monroe, passed away Monday, May 4, 2009.
His funeral was at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with Revs. Jon Tellifero and Tim Eich officiating. Interment was at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include his parents, Joseph W. Stoddard of Anderson, S.C. and Patricia B. Thibault of Monroe; brothers, Joseph A. Stoddard of Okala, Fla., Edward K. Stoddard of New Haven, Conn., and Theodore H. Stoddard of Pickens, S.C.; sisters, Judith A. Sass of Wallingford, Conn. and Joanne C. Stoddard Harkins of Meriden, Conn.; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Edward Sass, Thomas Golden, Steve Best, Cody Redding, Randy Redding, and Wayne Grubbs. Honorary pallbearer was Ken Redding.

Virginia Sweazy
Mrs. Virginia Sweazy, 83, of Monroe, and formerly of Dallas, Texas, finished her journey on this earth Friday, May 8, 2009, following a brief illness.
Her funeral was at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with Revs. Jim Ragsdale and Dan McClure officiating. Interment was at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her son, Daniel Lee Sweazy; and brothers, Shorty Jamerson and Jim Jamerson.
Survivors include her husband of 59 years, William "Bill" Sweazy; daughter, Sharon "Sherri" Sweazy Graves and husband, David "Dabo"; grandchildren, Lisa Graves, Michael Graves and wife, Rebecca, Bryan Graves and wife, Sherry, Kristy Miles, and Laura Blazier Hern; great-grandchildren, Andrew Kiefer, Ava Graves and Katelynn Bryant; sister, Mary "Skip" Weathers; brother, Eugene Jamerson; sisters-in-law, Buddy Jamerson and Margaret Hilbert; brother-in-law, Leroy Sweazy and wife, Daphne; special friend, Nell (Nonnie) Russell ; numerous nieces and nephews; and many wonderful friends in Dallas, Texas.
Pallbearers were Bryan Graves, David "Dabo" Graves, Doug Sweazy, Jared Curtsinger, Bobby Henson, Randy Armstrong and Gary Armstrong. Honorary pallbearers were Michael Graves, Eugene Jamerson, Leroy Sweazy, Mickey Quillin, Joe Jaynes, Tom Pravy, Eddie Nelson and Billy "Bubba" Henson.

Romeo Turgeon
Romeo (Art) Turgeon, 43, of Monroe, passed away Friday, May 1, 2009, following an illness.
Memorial services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2009, at St. Matthew Catholic Church with Father Joseph Puthuppally officiating. Arrangements were by Mulhearn Funeral Home of Monroe.
He was preceded in death by his father, Romeo A. Turgeon of Springhill.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Romeo A. Turgeon, of Springhill; sister, Denise Smith of Monroe; brother, Patrick Turgeon, of Shreveport; nieces and nephews, Megan and Peyton Smith of Monroe, and Macy and Gavin Turgeon of Shreveport.
Memorial donations may be made to The Cancer Foundation League.
