WM, Richwood to meet on gridiron

Two of the top programs in Ouachita Parish have agreed to meet on the football field during the 2009 season.

The West Monroe Rebels will host the Richwood Rams on Friday, Sept. 18, during the third playing date of the 2009 regular season.

"Yes, we will play Richwood," West Monroe defensive coordinator Jerry Arledge said. "We will play them at home this year."

West Monroe and Richwood will be meeting for the first time since Don Shows took over the West Monroe program as head coach in 1989.

Richwood reopened its doors in 1999 after an extended absence from LHSAA competition.

Richwood went 9-4 last season and will return the core of its defense, which helped the Rams reach the quarterfinals of the Class 3A playoffs before losing to eventual state runner-up Notre Dame.

West Monroe went 13-1 in 2008 and will be left plugging holes left by graduation. The Rebels lost to Destrehan in the Class 5A state championship game, 14-3.

The early season date between Richwood and West Monroe also means the teams will get to go at it before district starts. The showdown will give each team a tough physical game in a likely playoff-like atmosphere.

Richwood must replace quarterback Greg Johnson and top wide receiver Richard Wilson in 2009.

West Monroe will be replacing all-state linebacker Barkevious Mingo as well as starting quarterback D.J. Banks and three-year starting running back LaDarius Abrams, among others.

Plenty of talent still remains in the programs to give local high school football fans a big ticket now the third week of the 2009 high school football season.
