OCS wins school's first state softball title

A year ago, Ouachita Christian School found themselves in the state championship game and going toe-to-toe with the best in the state.

The Lady Eagles lost the softball state title in 13 innings last season. In 2009, it was a whole new ballgame.

OCS scored three runs in the fifth inning for a 3-1 victory over Ascencion Catholic at Frasch Park in Sulphur on Saturday evening.

The win gives OCS (27-3) the first softball state championship in school history. The title was also the first in the coaching career of head coach Joy Thomas.

"From the first time we met, we said we made it to the state championship last year," Thomas said. "And let's just drive, drive and do it again."

OCS tied up the score on a throwing error in the fifth. Abby Kalil and Kacie Linzay belted out back-to-back doubles that put the Eagles on top to stay.

Ascension Catholic took the lead to begin the fifth inning after the teams were stuck in a defensive stalemate for the first four innings of the game.

Ascension Catholic put more runners on the bases and in position to extend their lead before a squeeze bunt was ruled foul and the Lady Eagles used their stellar defense to get out of the jam from there.

The ruling was hotly contested by the Ascension Catholic coaches but ultimately stood to keep the game at 1-0 going into the bottom half of the fifth. OCS exploded offensively in the bottom of the inning to claim the gold.

"They stayed focused and said 'Let's get it back'," Thomas said.
