CCS beats Calvin for state title
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Claiborne Christian Lady Crusaders broke through the tape in a great defensive battle to beat top-seed and two-time defending Class C state champion Calvin to win 2-0 Saturday at the Fast Pitch 56 tournament in Sulphur.

The No. 2 Claiborne Christian team saw a great pitching performance from Kara Anderson, who struck out 13 Calvin batters over seven innings.

Calvin pitcher Hannah Howell also had 13 strikeouts, but runs by CCS in the bottom of the first inning and third inning brought the LHSAA Class C championship back to West Monroe.

"We knew we had to watch out for Calvin," CCS head coach Kristin Bennett. "They are tough and they had solid seniors, so we were ready for a battle."

With Anderson pitching at such a high level of intensity, Calvin was not able to get into the offensive rhythm that has led the team to multiple softball state titles.

"We did not get the timely hits we needed," Calvin head coach David Huckaby said.
It was not all easy sailing for the Lady Crusaders: twice the Lady Cougars threatened to put runs on the scoreboard.

With two outs and runners on second and third in the fifth, seventh-grader Alana Abels hit a hard liner which deflected off the Anderson's leg to third baseman Emily Clements, who threw to first base for the end the inning.

Again in the seventh inning, Calvin made a charge. Howell drew a walk and Clements reached on a single to move Howell to second.

Anderson responded with a strikeout of catcher Holly Rhymes to secure the championship for Claiborne Christian.

With four seventh-graders on the team, Claiborne Christian expects the next few years of softball to have a bright future for the Lady Crusaders program.
