Looking to strike it rich with another local star the ULM tennis team and head coach Terrence De Jongh announced the signing of Monroe, La., native Sidney Bruscato to a National Letter of Intent on Tuesday morning.
Bruscato, who prepped at Neville High School, will begin competing with the Warhawks in the 2009-10 campaign and will join sophomore Claire Clark, a product of Bossier City, in representing ULM's Louisiana contingent on the court.
"We are very pleased to be adding a player of Sidney's caliber to our team," De Jongh said. "I have been saying since I started at ULM that I wanted to have local players on the team and with Claire and Sidney, I feel we have two of the best in the state. Sidney will help us immediately. She is an aggressive athlete who has been playing tennis her whole life."
Holding a top five ranking in the state of Louisiana by the United States Tennis Association, Bruscato was the regional singles champion in 2007, 2008, and 2009. The NHS product capped her junior campaign with a 2008 Louisiana State Singles Championship.
As a high school freshman, Bruscato advanced to the state doubles finals with her partner. The Tigers also claimed four-consecutive regional championships with her in the line-up.
ULM is coming off a season in which it landed two student-athletes on the six-person all-Sun Belt Conference squad and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the league's championship tournament. After knocking off rival Louisiana-Lafayette in the opening match, ULM fell to league-champion Florida International, ranked 29th nationally, in the second round
ULM will compete in the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships in Denton, Texas starting on May 9.
