The West Monroe Lady Rebels softball team saw their magical run come to an end in Sulphur last Friday as the St. Thomas More upended WMHS 3-1 at Frasch Park in eight innings.

The two teams were in a classic defensive struggle most of the night as the teams were scoreless after five innings of play.

West Monroe pitcher Savannah Dollar and St. Thomas More pitcher Prophet Gaspard were flawless to begin the game.

First baseman Emily Viking took an inside fastball deep to right field for a two-run double in the eighth inning.

West Monroe trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the seventh, but tied the game on a RBI double by Mollie Sims. Dollar scored on the hit after herself reaching with a double.

A great throw from Shellie Landry after a brief hesitation caught Sims out at home plate to send the game to extra innings.

Gaspard allowed just one run and seven hits while striking out 10 Lady Rebels. Dollar was almost as impressive over her eight innings of work.

She also gave up seven hits with 10 strikeouts but three runs proved the difference for St. Thomas More .

West Monroe ends the season with a 25-6 record as well as the district 2-5A championship to add to their growing collection under head coach Amy Daigle.

West Monroe will lose three seniors, but will return the core of a team that surprised many around the state on another solid run to the state tournament.

St. Thomas More went on to defeat defending champion Mount Carmel in the semifinal round and take home the Class 5A state championship with a 3-1 win over Barbe High School.
